Screen Printing: Standard Form Of Printing

Screen printing has been used for the past several decades

. In fact it is a standard form of printing t-shirts. In this type of printing, screens and stencils are used to apply prints on the fabric of the shirt. With this method colorful prints can be produced and the ink is completely absorbed in the cloth. The best part is that this method produces high quality resolution images. This method is used for flat surfaces. For creating a print, the screen is placed on a fabric and the ink is placed on top of it. Then a rubber blade is used to spread the ink evenly across the entire screen. The ink then passes through the open spaces and spreads through the fabric placed below the screen. This screen can be easily used again and again and thus proves to be a cost effective method.

It also has an edge over iron-on designs commonly known as iron-on transfers. This is because the thick rubbery prints produced by the iron on transfers are likely to crack over a period of time. This method takes a lot of time whereas screen printing is a relatively a faster exercise.

But as developments were made in the printing world, digital printing was introduced to the world. Even so, screen printing is still being used for making contemporary designs. Another factor which is noteworthy here is that screen printing is cheaper than digital printing. This age old printing method proves to be cost effective. The per-unit cost is less than those of the digital printers.

In screen-printing one has to change the raw materials such as ink and stencils frequently to create multiple designs. In the digital printing several t-shirts can be printed without refilling the colors after each print. Therefore, screen-printing is more time consuming than digital printing. An important factor to note here is that for bulk printing of T-shirts of the same design screen-printing is the best option. But for producing customized T-shirts digital printing is the best option.

After making comparisons of this form of printing with the new advanced technologies, it can be said that screen printing has not lost its relevance completely. There are several firms where printing of bulk shirts makes use of this type of method. Screen-printing inks are not only used on fabrics but can be used to print on various types of surfaces such as ceramic objects, metal, glass and other synthetic items.
