Scuba diving and snorkeling are both water activities, popular in the Caribbean area. For those new to the sports, it is important to point out the differences between the two.
Scuba Diving
When scuba diving, you are fully submerged under the water. You use special scuba dive equipment to allow you to breath at deep sea levels. Typically an oxygen tank is strapped to your back and a breathing mechanism is attached. The mechanism is connected to a breathing mask that you wear.
Travel time for scuba diving is typically longer because you have to boat out to deeper sea levels. The actual dive time is limited though, depending on the size of your oxygen tank.
In order to scuba dive, you need to complete certification training so you know the safety precautions and how to use the equipment.
Typically, scuba divers visit old shipwrecks or formations far under water. They occasionally view coral reefs or see colorful fish but only in less deep areas.
The prices for scuba diving are more expensive hen snorkeling because of the equipment and training involved. An average price is around $35-45 for a one tank dive. Additional tanks can cost about $20 each.
Snorkeling
Snorkeling is usually done in about 2-3 feet of water. You float or skim the surface wearing a mask with a breathing tube reaching above the water. The only other equipment needed is fins to easy navigate the ocean or sea.
Snorkeling does not require training or certification. Many vendors run snorkeling vacation trips that anyone can participate in.
Since snorkeling is done at a shallower level, the lighting underwater is brighter. It allows you to see beautiful colored fish and coral reefs.
Snorkeling prices range from $20-35 for a half day trip, which is much longer and cheaper than a one tank dive.
