Sea Point Cape Town - Getting The Most From This Opulent Part Of The City
When driving through Sea Point Cape Town I always open the windows to let the sea in'. The breeze and salty smell and sometimes the sea spray is so refreshing and opens up the holiday atmosphere of this suburb.
Unlike city centre where the tall buildings, the hustle and bustle of the harbour and the highway obscure the ocean from everyone, here the ocean gets revealed to its inhabitants.
Colourful awnings cover the sidewalk where the aroma of fresh percolated coffee mingles with the chatter of patrons at one of the many street cafes.
Although Main road is just a few blocks away the presence of the sea stays palpable. These two streets are the arteries that serve this suburb and here you really get in close contact with the heartbeat of Sea Point.
The abundance of restaurants lining these streets serving foreign cuisine, mirror the character of this cosmopolitan suburb. Here you can enjoy food from Asia, Japan, Lebanese, Northern India and Korea in fact from all corners of the world.
On the paved promenade which lines the ocean and runs the whole of this suburb right up to Mouille Point, people escape the indoors to jog, walk Fido, lounge in the sun or simply do people watching as the time slips by. This is a communal recreation area for all to enjoy and a popular attraction of the area.
Here are a number of children's play areas with large lawns for the kids to practise some cricket or kick a soccer ball.
You will find it hard to get a communal swimming pool with a better view. The Pavilion, as this pool complex is known is set right on the sea with a beautiful view over Table Bay towards Robben Island in the distance. When facing inland you have a magnificent view of Lion's Head towering above the high rise apartment blocks that is so part of Sea Point.
The complex has an Olympic size pool with filtered sea water and two adjacent children's splash pools as well as a springboard diving pool.
This is a popular venue for swimmers practising for the open water event to Robben Island, held yearly.
Especially over weekends this is a hive of activity as families gather here under colourful brollies for a relaxing day in the sun. Beach umbrellas and deck chairs can be rented if you don't have any.
Come and enjoy the delights that Sea Point Cape Town has to offer - one of South Africa's seaside treasures.
