Sea Salt Vs. Table Salt
When you look for salt, you need to look for sea salt
. Ocean salt is superior to regular salt. However, don't be fooled by the label sea salt. Even if the salt comes from the ocean, it becomes regular salt if it is heavily processed. You need to find salt that leaves all the minerals behind.
In fact, true sea salt is slightly bitter in taste due to its magnesium content. The unrefined salt contains several minerals in addition to sodium. These minerals become necessary electrolytes in the body.
Recently several news articles also mentioned that sodium is not necessarily the cause of high blood pressure. The real cause of high blood pressure is from chemicals added during the refining process of the salt.
So if you have a choice between table salt vs. sea salt, you should always go for minimally processed sea salt. The reason is that sea salt still leaves trace minerals behind. It also does not have many chemicals and preservatives in it. Sodium and other minerals in the body are absolutely necessary for several biological functions in the body. Sea Salt vs. Table Salt
The problem is that we eat too much sodium through processed food and meat. Most of the meat you buy at a grocery store contains lots of sodium and preservatives so that the food has longer shelf live. Another culprit is bread and dinner rolls. Manufacturers add heavily processed salt to bread to make it tasty and last longer. So when you buy salt next time, remember the type of salt you eat matters a lot.
Another important thing to realize is that the body decides how much salt to retain based on stress levels. If you consume more sodium than your body needs, then you will be thirsty and drink more water. However, these days just drink soda instead of water to quench their thirst. As a result, the body gets confused and doesn"t excrete out the extra salt.
Exercise is another way to get rid of excess salt through sweat. Most people who exercise and sweat do not have to worry about hypertension as long as they eat sea salt and avoid processed food. Avoiding processed food restricts the amount of sodium coming to the body. Consuming sea salt ensures that your body gets a wide variety of minerals that your body needs.
So where do you find your sea salt? Your best bet is to go to a natural health store, Whole Foods or Trader Joe"s. Himalayan sea salt is pinkish in color while true sea salt from ocean is darker than refined salt.
