Search Engine Battle--Blekko Challenges Google
Through developing better search engine, some start-up companies and large companies are trying to chase Google. But they failed to enter new fields. Recently, Blekko released new search engine and throw down the challenge to Google.
Blekko was founded in June 2007; the headquarters is located in Redwood Shores, California. The company was established by the world's first computer virus maker Rich Skrenta and other partners. Before this, Skrenta worked for news website Topix. Then his left Topix and took five core team members from Topix jointly established Blekko.
Starting the end of July, Blekko invite 8,000 netizens to participate in the search engine internal tests. It is same as Google that Blekko can support full-featured web search service, it can grab data from billions of websites. But Blekko orient its service on "social search", namely, the user can use the tools provided to create personalized search results and share with others.
Purpose
Rich Skrenta pointed out since Google appeared; network was captured by a lot of useless information, various websites are full of links and keywords. The user could only find little relevant information by Google search results. And Blekko dedicated to useful, credible web sites and information, "our goal is the cleansing of the network, to clear network rubbish."
Difference
One: It is reported that Blekko will allow users to access the algorithm of the company and visit other data. This is an unprecedented openness; the purpose is to let the users themselves to strengthen the correlation of search results.
Two: Blekko previously stated, concerning on accuracy and correlation about search result, it is about the same with Google Microsoft. However, it provides a tool named "Slash tags" so that the user can optimize network news, blogs and other information easier, thus find out the information they want to see quickly.
Three: Blekko provide catalogue search including health, diet, automobile, hotel, songs, personal finance and university, etc. Users can get search results from a website, through input or search theme to narrow the scope of the search results.
Four: Blekko also allow users to search through multiple API, such as by adding "/ Amazon" on Amazon search and adding "/twitter" for twitter API search.
Challenge
Most users have already become accustomed to Google search. According to research organization COM Score in the United States, Google search takes up two-thirds of market share.
Although program is very complex, Google has made user search personal website or create customized web site groups easily. Blekko also focused on Google search engine ranking transparency problems and provided internal links such as website figures.
According to the resent situation, Blekko seems unwilling to compete with mainstream search services directly, such as Google, yahoo. But it hoped Internet users can use more personalized service provided by Blekko at the same time of using Google search.
