. I'm going to cover some of the more important things you'll need to do in order to get great results quickly and efficiently.
It's not well known that PR is not absolutely necessary for high rankings. With decent PR, decent rankings are a no-brainer. Without good PR, you've got to do a little more work. I'm not saying that Page Rank is not good, I'm just saying that it should not be the only thing you focus on. Webmasters have been brow-beat into thinking that their businesses will live and die with Page Rank. Your site's ability to convert visitors into some form of measurable action is a far more important measure of your site's worth than Page Rank.
Getting your web site to rank can mean a lot of blood, sweat and tears streamed into on and off-page search engine optimization. It's not uncommon to have your rankings bounce around a bit in the search engines as you find out what make your market tick. But before you go charging off, you must ensure that you've got the basics covered. And by that I mean your site must convert. Given that you've got a professional looking, properly coded and easily navigable site, it still has to convince visitors to take action. Here's where the rubber meets the road: Driving a visitor who has found your site via search to take action is Search Engine Marketing. You will be wasting your time, energy and resources if you set out to better your site's position in the search engines before you improve your conversions.
When developing your site, keyword research must come first. Not only is it going to drive your site's design and content, it's going to drive your site's marketing scheme. What is the most efficient way to market online? Job one is building backlinks. Mind you, not just any backlink will do. Oh no, we're talking backlinks with our keywords and keyphrases as anchor text. Back links from high Page Rank sites are going to be more potent than links from low Page Rank sites. But a link is better than no link, and lots of links is better yet. If one is better than none, then just how many is best? The answer to that question is mostly up to the competition you have in your market. The lower the competition, the fewer links you will need. Your anchor text will determine what keywords your site and pages will rank for. Get the anchor text right and you can do extremely well with just a few backlinks no matter the Page Rank of the site linking back to you. Pairing your keywords as anchor text will pretty much ensure that you've got an effective link building campaign off the ground. Keywords or phrases that don't speak to your market and you're dead. Ineffective anchor text and you may as well be dead!
Once you've got your anchor text and keywords sorted out and you're beginning to see some traffic, we come full-circle to conversions. We could go on for days discussing website conversions, but I want to leave that for a later date. I'm going to be talking about that in the next couple of days so stay-tuned.
