What is a blog? As a semi-professional blogger

, this is one of the questions that gets asked of me the most. Though I have answered it a lot of different ways in the past, it has left me thinking about many things. I think the first thing people need to realize is that asking this question always prompts another more important question: What are the different kinds and uses of blogs? This is a more important question because the answer affects the answer to the bigger "what is a blog" question. In this article I am going to look at several types of blogs and try to explain why you would have such a blog.

"Personal: This type of blog is created for someone to have an outlet to share what they are thinking and doing with people they know. This type of blog is mainly filled with personal posts about day-to-day things. Most of the time the target audience of these kinds of blogs are friends and family.

"Business: This can be some sort of Internet marketing blog or a blog dealing with any sort of offline or online business model. This is the most common kind of blog you see nowadays. These are blogs that are built around a business with the hopes of informing people about products and/or services. Also, these kinds of blogs are made to make money by themselves. There are people that make six figures a year doing nothing but blogging. It can be done - these people really do exist.

"Fan Blog: This is a type of personal blog. It is built around being a fan of something or someone. The ones I see most are built around either a celebrity or a TV show. These are traditionally mediums that create a lot of fans and blogs make it easy for those fans to have a platform from which to speak. Having a fan blog is one of the best ways to get noticed by other fans and form a fan base. This type of blog brings together people of like-minded interests that may otherwise have no other place to connect.

Now, with any of these types of blogs, the content can be a combination of text, pictures and video. It all really depends on the person and the focus of the blog. All three can be mainly text blogs if the person prefers, but at the same time people are very video oriented too and pictures do say a thousand words. So I think it is best to achieve some sort of balance among these three things.

I hope this helps answer the question a little at least. If you know what kind of blog the person has then you will understand what they are doing with it and why they have it in the first place. With that said, I think everyone should get out there and start blogging!
