Search Engine Optimisation Guide to The Basics

Search Engine Optimisation is seen to be a dark art but really it is just a case of following a schedule of events to grow your website adding good content, making sure your website is ticking all of the boxes both how it's coded and the way the structure and finally but very importantly you must get other websites linking to you - This is a very important factor in optimising your website for search engines.

Search engine optimisation is made up of 2 main parts:

1. On Page Optimisation

This is focused on the structure, content and coding of your website.

Search engines look to see if your website has search engine friendly page names.

A very important factor but something that many people get wrong is the content (the wording) of the website. The main rule is content, content, content and a bit more content. Natural stuff comes from the heart. Google has a special algorithm to check the content of your website, looking at keyword density, originality of content and the amount of content within your pages.

2. Off Page Optimisation

Off page optimisation is the trickier part of the two!

This is all about content that is pointing at you such as websites linking in. The golden rule here is to get websites linking in to you using your keywords as the link text, i.e. if you sell tennis rackets then your link text (the text that when clicked on goes to your website) needs to be buy tennis rackets. Search engines also look at your popularity on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Linked In.This is a new up and coming phenomenon so make sure you are part of it, if you don't understand it then there are companies such as Let Us Be Social who will setup your accounts on your behalf and manage them for you targeting traffic to your site from the social networks.
