Search engine optimisation (SEO) is vital for travel firms

Travel firms need to make sure their SEO London based campaigns are up to scratch as London holidaymakers tend to take to Google before booking their summer break.

According to new research from digital marketing specialist Greenlight, London holidaymakers were responsible for more than 17 million Google searches during the month of August alone. The figure shows that any firm without a solid SEO programme will struggle to make headway when it comes to winning the business of tech-savvy travellers. In its Holidays August 2010 report, the firm noted that the figure is a huge increase on the 9.5 million travel searches British consumers conducted in June - a 78 per cent increase to be exact.

Commenting on the importance of targeting Google when it comes to travel-based SEO, Alex Saint, of online holiday experts dealchecker.co.uk, said: "While the report showed that Turkey was the most popular searched for holiday destination, as it accounted for five per cent or 550,000 of the total search volume, it was also discovered that the term 'holiday' has been searched for over four million times, a figure which has almost doubled compared to a result of 2.2 million in May's report."

Mr Saint claimed that the figures are very promising for the travel industry, which has been contending with a relatively difficult year following the global economic downturn, record job losses and the eruption of Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull.

But, they are also promising figures for the SEO sector - as they show the vital importance of website optimisation.

Mr Saint summed it up perfectly, by saying: "What's really interesting about these findings is that it shows that more and more people are booking their holidays online, as organising a break is now as easy as typing something like cheap holidays from dealchecker into a search engine." The strong search engine performance of travel keywords makes it clear why Google wants to buy up ITA Software, which supplies flight data to the entire online travel industry.
