Seattle Car Accident Lawyer - Attorney Ad Lingo
Hoping to provide everybody the resources and knowledge to know how to fight their
personal injury lawsuit, Seattle car accident attorney Jason Epstein Jason examines common lawyer lingo used in advertising and tells you what it all really means.
I wrote a book a little while back called "The Shocking Truth About Lawyer Advertising," and in that book, I break down all of the nonsense that certain lawyers use in their ads. For those of you who have not read that book, here are some explanations of the most commonly used phrases by lawyers in the Yellowpages and on tv.
1.) "No fee if no recovery!" - This phrase is essentially meaningless because every personal injury lawyer I know of has this same policy. If the lawyer does not recover any money for you, then the only expenses out of your pocket will be for the costs involved. These costs are for routine and necessary expenses such as filing fees and expert witnesses. So make sure you don't get sold on an attorney because they mention this policy - every personal injury lawyer offers this same thing.
2.) "Free inital consultation!" - This phrase is pretty self explanatory, but just like the no fee if no recovery policy above, it is standard practice of basically every personal injury attorney. Lawyers will offer free initial consulatations, because if your case is good, everybody wants it. If you are far away, or unable to make it into the lawyer's office, but have a good case, it is also almost a guarantee that the lawyer will go to you if you would like a free consultation.
3.) "The best lawyer in XZY County!" - This kind of advertising really disturbs me. First of all, it is highly subjective and is merely the opinion of the law firm in the ad. Secondly, it is highly unethical and the state Bar could and should come down tough on any law firm that says this. Nobody can prove this statement, even if it is based on something like a poll of the local population.
4.) "28 years of combined experience" - Again, this is totally meaningless. Combined years of experience could mean something like 7 attorneys with 4 years of experience. This is a very decieving ad, because combined experience can sometimes have absolutely no correlation to substantial experience for each attorney.
5.) "Quick settlements in 30 days or less" - Phrases like these really scare me, because I know that they can trick some people into thinking it is a positive thing. An attorney who advertises that they settle cases fast will not be able to get you the kind of settlement that you are entitled to. The insurance companies keep a detailed list of attorneys they fight against, and know who is willing to go to trial and who is not. If your attorney is known for settling cases fast without considering trial, then the insurance company will know that they do not have to pay outmuch money.
