Breathing is the same for tai chi chuan as it is for taekwondo or any other martial art. You breath in when the body occupies less space, and you breath out when the body expands. Thus, for a beginning karate kata with twenty movements, there should be twenty breaths.

The body is a motor, it needs to be given fuel at a certain rate, so you eat three square meals a day (wholistic and pesticide free wheat grass...grin). It also needs oxygen at a certain speed, so you take thousands of breaths a day. Breathing in tune with your movements aligns with the requirements of the body.

Breathing once for every time you move will make your body make chi power. It will also educate you as yo the best way to utilize your body. Learning to breath properly through your martial arts patterns will educate you as to use your form more efficiently, and chi power will begin to amass in your movements.

A fascinating drill, if you really want to jack up your chi power, is to look at the breathing practices of yoga. In yoga you don't move much, but you do stretch out your breathing patterns. Thus, a higher degree of mental discipline is going to be required.

Count gently to four while breathing in to your body, then count to eight while breathing out, and you will have five breathing cycles every minute. Now try this method with breathing inward for five slow counts, and then out for ten. Which rate of breathing fits you?

Obviously, times will change as you progress and gain more mental discipline, and as your body becomes stronger. Now trying going through your martial arts, holding poses for these longer breathing times, holding your form while doing so.
