Secrets About Distemper In Canines

Many body systems can be affected by the viral disease known as distemper

. It can affect the central nervous, gastrointestinal, and respiratory systems of your dog. The disease, which usually affects young puppies, is most often fatal.

The air is the main mode of transmission of the virus that causes distemper. After breathing the airborne particles in, your dog will become infected. If your dog has been infected, you will shed the virus in his urine and feces. They continue to shed the virus a few weeks after the symptoms of the disease have subsided. The virus will stop being shed after your dog makes a complete recovery.

As previously mentioned, the canine distemper virus can cause problems with the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and central nervous systems. Vomiting, conjunctivitis, and diarrhea are some of the most common symptoms. Pneumonia or other signs of an upper respiratory infection may also occur.

Dogs infected with this virus commonly lose their appetite, develop a fever, and experience eye inflammation. If the central nervous system is infected, your dog will experience depression, seizures, and loss of motor skills and mental abilities. If these symptoms occur, it may be assigned that there is something more seriously wrong with your dog.

The vet may have a hard time diagnosing distemper since some of its signs can be caused by other conditions. A laboratory test will need to be done to confirm a diagnosis. There are various methods used to detect the virus and dogs that are affected will have low white blood cell counts.

Since distemper in dogs can cause damage to the intestinal lining, antibiotics may be given to prevent bacterial infections. If diarrhea is a problem, medications can be given to the relieve that. Some dogs become dehydrated because of the diarrhea. They will need to be given intravenous fluids.

Distemper can be prevented using an available vaccine. This is all a part of the routine immunization process. Some dogs will need to receive a booster shot every couple of years or so.
