Spy camera is basically a hidden camera that captures stills or videos of people without the knowledge of the person being filmed. Spy cameras have traditionally been used for security and surveillance purposes, but with the passage of time they are increasingly being used by detectives for espionage purposes.

Spy cam can be wireless or wired. This depends on the functions and usage of that camera. There are various types of spy cameras available in the market. All these cams are wired cameras and provide video feed to the host computer through a cable. These cameras are mostly used for surveillance purposes and at conditions where mobility of a camera is not required.

In the wireless camera category there are nanny cameras, Wi-Fi cameras, wireless TX RX cameras, light bulb camera and wireless pinhole camera. Wireless cameras are generally used to give mobility to the user. It means that the user can take the camera places and make use of it without cables or wires.

Under the above mentioned categories, the spy camera has come off age in coming with new variants each time that have revolutionized the field of espionage. A spy cam can be built in the shape of common household objects. There are pen cameras, can cameras, cap cameras, clock cameras, watch cameras, chewing gum cameras, car toy cameras and ID card cameras. Apart from these, key chain cameras, lighter cameras, pendant cameras, car key cameras, snake cameras and DVR cameras are also available.

The use of a spy cam is very common by private detectives. These cameras along with microphones, bugs and other instruments help detectives collect information about the suspect. Hidden cameras have also been a part of some very popular TV shows as well. However, there is a big question mark attached with the use of hidden cameras. This question is related to the right to freedom and privacy of a person being spied upon. Therefore, spy camera becomes a risky venture.

In short, the basic nature of a spy camera goes against the right to privacy, as spy cams are used mostly to keep an eye on people without their knowledge or consent. Spy cams are available in a wide variety and in case normal gadgets are to be used, they would not even cost much on the pocket. However, high end spy camera is very expensive.
