To ensure that the StorageTek L180, L700, L700e or L1400 tape library is secure for moving, relocation and shipping there are a few simple steps needed. One of the most fragile and valuable components in a tape library is the robotic hand or picker assembly. These steps will keep them safe and protected. Items needed are a foam block cut to the exact size of the picker hand and two shipping pins that will hold the two axis's of the hand assembly.
The foam block will be placed in the picker itself to prevent any movement inside the library. If it is not properly secured, the hand can get caught in the slots and cause irreparable damage to both the picker and slots.
The shipping pins have two specific places to go in the library. On the top reel, line up the hole on the reel with the hole on the bracket. Press firmly to slide the pin in until you hear it snap, and it locks in place. That will prevent the hand assembly from moving from side to side and causing irreparable damage to the entire library.
The second pin is used to secure the counter weight on the lower part of the hand assembly inside the column. Locate the hole; adjust the weight up or down to align it with the hole on the bracket and pop it in place to stabilize the hand. The StorageTek L180, L700, L700e or L1400 will not move and is ready for shipping. The shipping pins may be difficult to install, be very firm with them. They are not in their proper place unless you've heard a loud click.
