Sedation Dentistry: What Is It? Who Are Ideal Candidates

Sedation dentistry is a term that refers to the use of anesthesia during a dental

procedure in order to put the patients into a relaxed, sleep-like state. This type of treatment is most often used in situations that require an extensive amount of time to perform. It is also ideal for individual who my be apprehensive about their checkups or have difficulty controlling their movements.

While it is a common belief that a sedation dentist is one who works on patients while they are unconscious, such is typically not the case. Some forms simply alleviate anxiety or put patients in a dream like state of mind. In this way, there is little felt or remembered from the treatment.

There are various types of treatment within this field. The specific technique used will ultimately depend on the treatment being performed and / or the degree of the patients anxiety. The dentist will be able to inform you whether you are a candidate for moderate sedation or something stronger.

Candidates for this these types of treatments include those undergoing complex treatments and would prefer their treatment performed during a single visit, in addition to those with a fear of needles and other anxieties pertaining to dental work.

Many people, including small children, have a natural fear of the dentist. Others have simply experienced an instance in their past that has made them reluctant to seek out treatment again. This can be harmful to people in that oral health issues will commonly go untreated for years at a time. The result is typically a more lengthy, painful operation with a bill to match. Sedation dentistry effectively eliminates many of these problems and fears, and is thus and ideal solution.

Likewise, this can also apply directly to children. In the case that there is a child who is fearful of attending their dentist appointment, a pediatric sedation specialist may just be the ticket.

Common reasons for seeking out a pediatric specialist are:

* Infants with dental care issues

* Small children who require extensive work

* Children who show a very strong gag reflex

* Children who have had a traumatic experience in the past

* Medically compromised children

* Mentally handicapped children

When it's all said and done, not many people can honestly say they enjoy sitting in the dentist chair. Though, through these methods, many people are able to receive the kind of care they so rightfully deserve, without the anxiety.
