See The Best Architecture In Rome
There is no better place on earth to enjoy impressive architectural sights than Rome
, the eternal city. From the world renowned tourist hub the Colosseum to lesser known buildings, this city makes you feel as though you"ve jumped into the pages of a historical architecture book; everywhere you go, you"ll be wowed by another building "" just make sure these sights are top of your list.
The Colosseum "" You"ve heard about it, read about it, but seeing is believing. This magnificent structure represents the glory days of the Roman Empire and its power, influence and sheer magnificence. Once the largest amphitheatre in the Roman Empire, it was built in the first century AD by Emperor Vespasian who wanted to create something for his citizens to enjoy. The opening of the Colosseum was just as grand as the building itself with 100 days of games for 50,000 spectators to enjoy. Architecturally, the Colosseum is quite a feat as it is perfectly symmetrical and ornately decorated in marble and stone. The building you see today may not be quite as spectacular as it once was (a third of it has been lost over time due to natural disasters, wars and pillaging) but it still packs a punch.
Hadrian"s Villa "" Considered the best-preserved Roman villa complex in the world, Hadrian"s Villa (or Villa Adriana) is the Playboy Mansion of the Roman Empire "" and the central hub of power of the Roman world during Emperor Hadrian"s reign. 30 buildings were built across 250 acres of land from libraries to theatres plus there are small island retreats where Hadrian chilled out. Architecturally, it"s fascinating to see such an impressive and grand house from so many years ago and is a stark reminder of how modern architecture uses ideas from history "" including some Rome hotels.
Basilicia of St Peter "" Possibly the largest church in Christianity, this is one of the holiest sites and traditionally the burial site of Saint Peter, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus. Housed within the Vatican, it"s an awesome church and unlike any you"ll have seen before. It"s sheer scale and design is mind blowing, especially considering it was built in 1506.
Cappuchin Crypt "" Admittedly, not many tourists staying in cheap hotels would find this hidden gem but it"s one of Rome"s creepiest yet essential visits. This will give your trip to the city a certain edge "" several small chapels are "decorated" with the bones of over 4,000 Cappuchin monks. Not quite as pretty as some sights but a different side to Roman architecture that"s worth exploring.
