Ranking on Google is not only dependent on the architectural structure of a website
but on other webpages "liking" or "voting" for the pages you want to rank. If we'd spent half as much time on developing & implementing a content plan with our clients as we do researching keywords, monitoring ranking & analyzing analytics, our client sites would be much further ahead for it.
We lose sight of the fact that building great content is a very difficult task for our clients. As search marketers we would better serve our clients by taking the time to use all that keyword research to understand what content to build and when we should be building it. Time of year & search volumes can impact traffic as well as ranking, so much that we should use all the data we can in building the content plan.
What type of content & when really depends on products & services you are looking to move on with first. The content plan should include tips & tricks for consumers to make educated purchase decisions or learn more about what they are considering. It should also include an instruction video or two, some Facebook awareness & if possible a few great great client testimonials in either video or written format.
For great content, 4 or 5 pages, once a month that is thoughtful and planned can do nothing but help you gain traction in ranking. The overall content plan can be 6, 12, 18 or 24 months & would plan out all of the content you want to make sure is built. It seems so much easier over a longer time period than if you tried to do all the content building at once. There will always be scenarios where you need to add content on the fly but a great plan helps break it out.
The benefit to the client is that their consumers now have really great content to be engaged with on the website so they can have better and well informed purchase decisions.
And is that really all the search engines want?
