Seeing The Last Play At Shea

On July 18th, 2008, I attended the last concert ever to be held at the late Shea Stadium: it was called The Last Play at Shea

. Now, full disclosure: I am a huge Billy Joel fan, and I had seen him in concert a number of times before that night at Shea. But I dont think I am exaggerating when I say that I was witness to one of the greatest concerts of my generation. It was a magnificent journey through music history, with Joel playing all of his hits (and some obscure gems as well), and special guests coming on stage, like John Mellencamp, Roger Daltry of the Who, and last but not least, Sir Paul McCartney. And keep in mind, this was the stage that the Beatles played the first ever concert at Shea back in 1969. It was a brilliant bookend, and the stadium was shaking as Billy announced his name. It was truly an awesome night, and one that I will never remember.

And now, in only a few short weeks, The Last Play at Shea documentary will be playing at Citi Field, the ballpark that replaced Shea, in Queens, NY. And as historic as the concert was, this film might be even more so: it is being billed as the largest outdoor movie premier since 1919. 1919! I cant even fathom how long ago that was. I, for one, cant wait to see this movie and Ill be buying tickets as soon as I can. However, I have the advantage of living very close to the city.
