Seeing Your Dentist About Wisdom Tooth Pain
It's something that many adults have to deal with in their 20's: incoming wisdom
teeth that don't quite fit into the established framework of their mouth. When they come in and encroach on territory that has already been staked out, it can cause a lot of pain. If you're feeling some of that pain, you need to see your dentist and determine whether or not the tooth needs to be removed. He will take some x-rays, which will help him see the angle at which the teeth are approaching, the kind of room they have to develop, and whether or not any infections have set in. If he decides surgery is necessary, you're better off getting them out as soon as possible.
Recommendations
The American Dental Association has recommendations that cover the question of whether or not a wisdom tooth should come out. There are four primary signs, the presence of which may indicate needed surgery. A tooth embedded in the gums is one such sign. A tooth that is only partially emergent may also be a candidate for removal. The development of a cyst surrounding the tooth and a strange angle of approach are two additional indications that surgical removal may be your best option. Your dentist will look at your teeth, the amount of pain you're feeling, and these recommendations to decide what to do.
Extraction
If your dentist notices problems that would coincide with a recommendation for extraction, that is exactly what he will probably recommend. Wisdom tooth extraction is surgery and, while it is commonly performed, it is still something you'll need to be prepared for. That said, there really is little choice to be made in the matter. If you ignore the recommendation, you could be inviting a host of oral health problems that will lead to a lifetime of pain. Depending on whether or not you are having a single tooth extracted or multiple teeth taken out, you may be put under local or general anesthetic. If the tooth is embedded, the surgery will be more complex and potentially painful than if it is not.
Healthy Wisdom Teeth
Of course, the wisdom tooth pain you're experiencing may be nothing more than the discomfort associated with any new tooth growth. You've simply forgotten what it feels like, since you were a child when it last happened. If your teeth are healthy and growing without problems, your dentist may still recommend taking them out. Because of their positioning, wisdom teeth can be difficult to brush and floss, making them prime candidates for decay and cavities.
