Seenigama Temple- A Typical Village Experience

A little hamlet town close to Galle and off the Colombo "" Galle Road at the 96th milepost

, is Seenigama. The town, known for its thriving lime industry has now dwindled considerably following the devastating 2006 Tsunami.

Being a coastal town, fishing is one of its other main livelihoods. In true Sri Lankan fishing community culture, the worship of Devol Deviyo or Devol god is prevalent. Ceremonies for this god are considered a must for successful fishing expeditions and are the norm in such coastal areas.

The Seenigama Temple located on a low hill in the town has taken upon itself the Devol god as its patron deity. This temple, which is also known as a sanctuary, is steeped in culture and tradition involving Devol worship.

Unfortunately documented and historical evidence is lacking to pin point the time period of the temple. However, going by the structure one can definitely say the temple is at least 300 years old. But it is common belief that the temple dates back to around 1300 years.

The original land on which the Seenigama Temple stood is now a small island which can only be reached via boat. A popular destination, the temple is a revered and a sacred place. The patron deity is thought not only to bring good luck to the fishermen but also to solve the problems of its worshippers.
