Select Lead Acid Battery From Ewing Component Inc

First invention of the Lead Acid Batteries was done by a French physicist in 1859

, which was later on improved to rechargeable Lead Acid battery. Despite having a very low energy-to-weight ratio and a low energy-to-volume ratio, their ability to supply high surge currents means that the cells maintain a relatively large power-to-weight ratio. These features, along with their low cost, make them attractive for use in motor vehicles to provide the high current required by automobile starter in the mechanical instruments and machines.

It comes in two segments ie portable and heavy duty/weight batteries in the modern age.

Battery Electrochemistry

In these batteries two types of chemicals (Acid) Lead sulphate and sulfuric acid in the same proportionate are used to maintain the charging worthiness, even to maintain these batteries the levels of acid is top up by the user for the good performance of these batteries.


In the charged state, each cell contains negative plates of elemental lead (Pb) and positive plates of lead (IV) oxide (PbO2) in an electrolyte of approximately 33.5% v/v and sulfuric acid (H2SO4). The charging process is driven by the forcible removal of electrons from the negative plate and the forcible introduction of them to the positive plate in the Acid.

Overcharging with high charging voltages generates oxygen and hydrogen gas by electrolysis of water, which is lost to the cell. Periodic maintenance of lead acid batteries requires inspection of the electrolyte level and top up of water that has been lost.

Due to the freezing-point depression of water, as the battery discharges and the concentration of sulfuric acid decreases, the electrolyte is more likely to freeze during winter weather. In the discharged state both the positive and negative plates become sulfate and the electrolyte loses much of its dissolved sulfuric acid and become primarily water. The discharge process is drive by the conduction of electrons from the positive plate back into the cell at the negative plates.

The negative and positive plates are kept separate by fixing the PVC or polyethylene separators between these plates to avoid short circuits in the batteries

These are general voltage ranges for six-cell lead-acid batteries:

Open-circuit (quiescent) at full charge: 12.6 V (2.1V per cell)

Open-circuit at full discharge: 11.7 V

Loaded at full discharge: 10.5 V.

Continuous-preservation (float) charging: 13.4 V for gelled electrolyte; 13.5 V for AGM (absorbed glass mat) and 13.9 V for flooded cells

1.All voltages are at 20 C (68 F), and must be adjusted -0.0235V/C for temperature changes.

2.Float voltage recommendations vary, according to the manufacturer's recommendation.

3.Precise float voltage (0.05 V) is critical to longevity; insufficient voltage (causes sulfation) which is almost as detrimental as excessive voltage (causing corrosion and electrolyte loss)

Typical (daily) charging: 14.2 V to 14.4 V (depending on temperature and manufacturer's recommendation!)


Equalization charging (for flooded lead acids): 15 V for no more than 2.205 hours. Battery temperature must be absolutely monitored.

Use of Lead Acid batteries:

The Lead Acid batteries are mostly used in the Automobile Starters, Lighting, Ignitions,Generators and power backup for communication equipments and computers. These batteries are now automatically recharged with the instruments whenever required.
