Selecting The Right Telescopic Sight For Your Rifle - Part 1

When deer hunting season opens, avid deer hunters will want their rifle to be outfitted

with the ideal telescopic sight, one that suits not only his rifle, but also the area he is hunting in, as well as his own personal hunting and shooting technique.

If the deer hunter is going to hunt in an area where long range shots are required, it is vital that he/she purchases the best possible scope possible. Most hunters prefer to get an adjustable magnification scope so that he/she is able to perform general observation, closer range shots, and long range shots, all with one scope. When looking at the listings for an adjustable rifle scope, you will normally find the minimum magnification, the maximum magnification, and the diameter of the objective lens. For example: a "3x9x42" scope will be listed with a minimum magnification of 3 power, a maximum magnification of 9 power, and a 40 millimeter objective lens diameter.

Understanding the Magnification Range of a Scope

A standard scope will offer a deer hunting range of 3x9 magnification. However, if you will be in heavily wooded areas where you will probably be within fifty yards of the deer then a 4x scope will also work nicely. On the other hand, if your hunting grounds are open areas where you will need to shoot from a distance, then you will prefer a 4x12, or a 4.5x14. As a general rule, anytime you are working in open areas such as the plains you will leave your scope operating at a higher power. This is because your visibility is not obstructed, so you can usually see the entire area and will not be surprised by a deer or other animal. There are also instances where you will be shooting from one hilltop to another.

Next We Will Look at The Objective Lens Size

The typical deer hunting rifle scope has an objective lens size of 40-44 mm. However, you can find some advertised objective lenses as big as 50, 56, or possibly 75mm. It is important to realize that objective lenses of these sizes are usually not to your advantage. When they are set at their highest power, these larger objective lenses will simply provide more usable light than the smaller objective lenses. Unfortunately, they can be quite uncomfortable and are hard to align with the eye.

When your scope is properly mounted and properly functioning you should be able to bring the gun to your shooting position with your eyes closed, and when you open your eyes find that you are already looking through the center of your scope. However, the large objective lenses make this impossible because the mounting height for the scope will put it at an unnatural position for your eyes. Not only will this scope make your rifle feel more awkward, it will also make it slower, less comfortable and unbalanced.

Buying the proper scope to fit your hunting locale and type of shooting is key to making successful shots.
