Your dog isn't much different from you and me when it comes to sleeping. It likes to spend as much time as they can lounging and sleeping in their bed so it is very important you choose a dog bed the dog will like. However, your dog won't have the luxury of shopping for their own bed, nor will they get the opportunity to try out and test different mattress styles. It is up to you to make the decision for them so choose correctly.

A dog owner's first concern is to look at dog beds large and durable enough to match the breed of dog you own. The next factor is typical weather and where it will be located. Will the bed be located outside in a dog house or will it be kept in the living room of your house. If the bed is kept outside, the kind of bed you choose will be dependant on if it rains or snows a lot or if it is hot and humid. Your dog's bed needs to be able to stand up to whatever Mother Nature throws at it.

An important factor when shopping for dog beds is the bed's shape. They can be found in shapes such as nests, balls, or mattresses. In order to figure out the shape of bed your dog would like, watch how it sleeps next time the dog takes a nap. Dogs that like to curl up in a ball would be better suited for a nest or ball type of bed. Dogs that prefer to stretch out while they sleep are better off with a mattress design. These beds allow the dog to toss, turn, curl and stretch.

Personally, I look for covers made from machine-washable fabrics so that you can remove the cover from the mattress and throw it in with the laundry. Also, you'll want a fabric tough enough to withstand sharp dog toenails. Above all else, pick a cover made from stain-resistant fabric.
