Selective Denervation Surgery
Dystonia is a neuromuscular problem in which the connection between the muscles and nerves fails
. Normally, the nerves control the muscles by ordering them to relax or contract as per your brain's impulses and thoughts. However, if something happens to this connection, your muscles are free to spasms and twitch uncontrollably. This dystonia is typically incurable, but its symptoms can be reduced through a process called selective denervation surgery.
Normally, your muscles come in contrasting pairs. For instance, your biceps bend your arm, while your triceps straighten the arm. Dystonia can result in the opposing pairs contracting that the same time, meaning that your arm can spasm as your triceps pull against your biceps and vice versa. This can be painful, and it can pull your body into awkward, embarrassing positions.
Although there are several different types of dystonia, one of the most distressing forms is cervical dystonia, where the muscle twitches occur in your neck, twisting your head and causing other painful symptoms. To help control the disabling spasms, a doctor in the 1970s devised a method to reduce the spasms. Dr. Claude Bertrand, with the help of other doctors, worked to sever peripheral nerves whose firing worsened the cervical dystonia.
When doctors face a patient with cervical dystonia, they first identify the nerve and muscle groups causing the worst dystonia. This is why the surgery is called "selective." Next, the carefully cut the nerves in those dystonia groups, called "denervation."
This can alleviate the worst muscle spasms, but you may still experience some spasms from more minor areas of dystonia. While some minor nerves may be able to undergo selective denervation surgery, doctors may not be able to cut all effective nerves because it can weaken your neck.
Doctors are not exactly sure of what causes cervical dystonia, but they have found links between the anti-acid reflux drug Reglan and neuromuscular disorders such as cervical dystonia and tardive dyskinesia. If you have been diagnosed with cervical dystonia or another neurological disorder after taking Reglan, you may be entitled to financial compensation to help with your pain and suffering.
