Selling With Twitter - What's the Real ROT?

Unless you've had your head buried in the sand like an ostrich for the last year or so, I'm sure you've heard all the chirping going on about Twitter. Everywhere from World Wide Web to your local T.V., there's someone saying, "follow me on Twitter". Seems like everywhere you go you hear people squawking about it.

But what's it really all about? What's the R.O.T.? How exactly is everyone from your local bank to the corner store, from your dentist to the dry-cleaners down the street, using Twitter? Has everyone just gone batty, or are there really ways for businesses to use this new social medium to make some scratch?

The inventors of Twitter explain that it connects you with everything you want to know about anything, right now. Twitter is designed to allow just about anyone to access short bursts of information which are made readily available from news organizations, corporate entities, politicians, celebrities, local businesses - even your close friends and family. Also, if you have something to share with the world, Twitter makes it relatively easy.

Founded in 2007, Twitter, Inc. is perhaps the fastest growing network Online. It's founders believe the open exchange of information can have a positive global impact. When using Twitter, every "Tweet" is limited to 140 characters of text or links which means they are easily written or read on a wide variety of services and devices including any mobile phone, social networks, television, Macs PC's and the Web."

Like so many, I wanted to get in on the 'hottest' thing going. I jumped right in like a hatch-ling leaping from the nest for the very first time. Relentlessly, Ive been Tweeting away on Twitter, like a songbird on a spring morning. Many say to try and stay away from blatantly selling your product. Simply share 'valuable content' with your followers.

I've been spreading little bits of wisdom and inspirational quotes around over there, like chicken feed in a barn yard. Informing my fellow twits of all the newest software and marketing tools, trying to feed them like a Mother Robin dangling a worm from my beak.

It seems easy enough to gain 'followers', adding new prospects to your flock. Simply focus like a hawk to follow only those that show some kind of commonality to your interests. You know, birds of a feather. There are even software programs available that promise to bring followers to your coop, filling it with more dodo birds than you'll know what to do with. Some old crows out there even have tens of thousands following them.

The question remains. Is there a way to effectively gauge if your time spent on Twitter is bringing in sales? What is the real R.O.T,? The Return On Tweets?

Is there any solid data, or documented factual evidence that Tweeting away all day, cooing to the other pigeons, produces anything other than a flock of seagulls flying around, circling the trawler? A wise old owl once said that a bird in the hand is worth more than two in the bush. So how do you know if all your Twittering produces results? Does anyone have a feather in their cap that can prove a real R.O.T.?

The obvious answer is simple. The next time you speak to your customers, ask them how they found you. Have they been following you on Twitter? Question your prospects. Ask your clients if they even use this medium and decide for yourself. Is it worth your time? Just like any other form of advertising, you must have a system in place designed to track your results to properly gauge your R.O.T., your return on tweets.
