Senile Dementia: Common Problem Of The Aged

Dementia is very common in the geriatric population

, or the aged. Dementia is a serious disorder in the brain, where an individual may be difficult in remembering things, communicating and learning. This is caused by brain cell damage. Senility or senile dementia is the term use for dementia in elderly. It has been said according to studies, that it is a normal part of growing old. The difficulty to remember and inability to learn and communicate make it more complicated for people with dementia to take care of themselves.

Dementia may also cause mood swings and personality changes. On early stage, memory gap may bother the elder with a dementia. But as the condition progresses, upsetting behavior and other problems may create a problem on the part of caregivers.

You may notice your elders to be having a memory loss. Often she would ask questions repetitively and forgets that they already ask you about it yesterday, or hours ago. They may also often misplace their things. At some time they placed their things on a table, and then later on forget where they placed them. Mood and personality changes also happen to elders with dementia. At times they may be calm, and then at another time they are angry and stubborn. Other adults that have dementia may unable to speak the used language; they may forget words and language.

Some causes of dementia may be treated, but when the brain cells have been totally destroyed it would be hard to treat and stop the damage of the other cells. In this case, treatment would be focusing on aiding the elder in her daily activities and decreasing the disturbing symptoms. Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors may be prescribed by the doctor.


Some elders with dementia are having problems regarding sleeping. Even if its late night, they would still want to wander around the house. Here are some ways on how to put them on bed:

Make the person aware of the time and day. You can place clock where they can easily take a look at. Or when you try to feed them, inform them that the meal is served as breakfast or lunch for them to be more aware of the time.

Control the caffeine they consume.

Avoid them from taking naps during day time so it would be easier for them to go the bed at night when they have few rest.

Try to help your elders with some exercises regularly.


Make their room more peaceful and conducive for sleeping.

If your elders are taking medicines that may alter sleep, consult the doctor if you can give the drugs before bedtime.

Aside from that you may also need to make your home a safe place for elders with dementia. Adults with this condition usually love to wander around the house. So it would be better if you put loose cords away, fix your carpets and provide a well-lighted staircase. You may also put alarm system that will alert when the elder tries to get up from bed at night, or leaves a certain area.
