Senior Citizen Nighttime Safety Tips

If you are a senior citizen who lives at home or if you have a loved one who is 65

years of age or older, staying safe during the nighttime hours is a real concern. Statistics show that most home accidents for seniors happen after sundown: here are some tips to help these valued citizens stay safer.

Put Lights on a Timer

As would be expected, most accidents are caused by inadequate lighting which cause trips and falls. Putting strategically-placed floor and table-top lamps on an automatic timer will keep seniors from having to grope their way to wall plates when it gets dark. These automatic lights should be placed where seniors are most likely to go during the evening hours: in the kitchen, living room, TV room, and bedroom. They can be turned off when they are no longer needed or allowed to turn off automatically after a period of hours.

Keep a Constant Light in Dark Places

Hallways that don't receive any natural light are one of the most common areas for accidental tripping. A light-sensitive plug-in night light that operates on low wattage will provide an extra measure of safety in hallways at any time of the day or night.

Eliminate Hazards

Never keep area rugs at the bottom of or at the top of flights of stairs. It is simply too easy to catch a toe under one of these rugs when the light is dim, even though the senior is perfectly aware of its presence.

Protection in the Middle of the Night

Most senior citizens have to get up in the middle of the night, either because they are restless or because they need to go to the bathroom. Because they are in a groggy state, seniors are at even greater risk of injury even if they are not going very far. Keeping a light on all night is not conducive to a good night's sleep and it wastes electricity. One new product that is useful is a battery-operated portable stand-alone nightlight that operates via motion sensitivity. Multiple units can be kept at strategic places such as at a bedside and in the bathroom. As the senior gets up, the light automatically comes on: it can be carried if necessary for extra safety. Once in the bathroom, the senior's motion activates the night light in that area; after a pre-set amount of time, the night lights go off again.

Seniors or their loved ones should always keep an eye out for new products on the market that will help make life easier and safer for everyone.
