Seo stands for seach engine optimisation, this is the use of various techniques to improve a websites ranking in the seach engine results and thus attract more traffic to your site. In all honesty SEO is not as complicated as people like to make out, the fundementals of SEO are within reach of anyone who is will enough to study and implement what they learn.

One thing I would like to make clear is the majority of Search Engine Optimisation is very tedious and time consuming. It can also take some time to appear and affect traffic, however dont get disheartened as 80% of all 'new' site vists are covered though search engines.

Keyword research is vital to any SEO campaign - keywords and phrases are terms that you feel people would type into a search engine in order to find your website. When you build lists of keywords we focus on three main groups: general, specific, niche:

General - These are the biggest and broadest terms, they are the most popular terms with the most searches and the highest competition. You will usually find that big coportate companies will spend millions to be on the top spot for these terms

Specific - More specfic to you or your product, such as a speciality, your locations and or your products.

Niche - Keywords that have a lower level of searches but with limited competition. These are usually like gold dust in search engine terms and if you can find one it will make significant difference to your search engine traffic.

Choosing the right keywords is critical as it will make or break your page ranking you have to use terms that have a high search rating and a relativly low competition ranking. To find the best terms for your website use googleAdwords.

Page title - It is important that your page title includes your target keywords, it should be relativly short and precise you need to also make sure it is readable as it will appear on google.

Meta Description and keywords - It use to be the main sourse of optimisation but it has slipped down the ranks now, however it is still important that you fill them in. Keywords and phrases should be seperated using commas and your descirption should be rich in your keywords.

Conent is King - textual content is an important part of the picture that google paints of you. Your content should be wrote to include your keywords but still readable for the reader. The more keywords the better the picture that google paints.

Alt tags- An alt tag is the textual refference given to an image on a site which is used to give google spiders an idea of what its about, You should use these to your advantage by making them keyword dense.

Finally one thing you will want to make sure that you do is getting your website verified by google so it knows you exisit. You can do this using google analytics, which is also quite useful for analysing the traffic that comes to your site.
