When it comes to your sites SEO optimization, are your permalinks helping, or hurting you?
Permalinks apply only to those website or blogging platforms where the URL's to your sites posts or pages are dynamically generated.
They are the URL's that are created from the Permalinks Settings of your sites admin, or dashboard area.
Each post or page you create, will generate a URL for that specific piece of content.
In Wordpress, the "Default" permalink, which is automatically activated when you first install Wordpress, looks like this:
http://www.yourdomainname.com/?p=123.
Wordpress automatically generates random numbers as you create new posts and pages.
This type of URL is not search engine optimization (SEO) friendly, nor is it user friendly.
In order to put your permalinks to work for you and your SEO optimization, the desired permalink structure would look like the following:
http://www.yourdomainname.com/category/postname
So how do you create that type of permalink?
In your systems dashboard, or admin area, you want to find the "Permlinks Settings". There you will see an option for "Custom Structure" followed by a blank box.
In that box, you want to define what you would like to appear after your domain name. Two of the most commonly used custom structures are:
/%category%/%postname%/ and /%postname%/
For the first structure your resulting URL, or permalink would look like this:
http://www.yourdomainname.com/category/posttitle (or page, as permalinks apply to both).
This is a far more SEO optimized URL, or permalink, that you can benefit from.
The second structure would produce a similar permalink, minus the category name. If you are using, as you should be, your keywords and phrases in each and every post and page title, then this permalink structure would also benefit you.
SEO optimization is more than just permalinks, but they are certainly one key element that you can easily and effectively use to your advantage to gain the approval of the search engines, thus increasing your ranking power.
A word of caution....if you're site is established, and you have already created posts and/or pages using the "Default" permalink structure, change the structure with caution. Potential risks, if not done properly, are that the links that may already be out on the Internet, and in the search engines, can go "dead", or become inactive. If you are ranked for any of those URL, or permalinks, that could have an impact.
