Septoplasty Surgery: Because It Is Not Just A Broken Nose
In certain instances, a broken nose is a badge of honor especially in men
. In fact, it can even add a certain aura of manliness as in the case of Owen Wilson. Lest you think, however, that it is alright in all instances to sport a broken nose, think again. You may have a deviated septum that requires septoplasty surgery. But don't think either that only people with obviously broken noses will require the operation as even individuals with seemingly perfect noses can have the medical condition and not know it.
What Happens with the Nose?
In normal cases, the nasal septum equally separates the right and left cavities of the nose and, hence, is located in the center. About 80 percent of individuals will have a deviated septum wherein one nasal passage is smaller than the other. If you do have a deviated septum, it does not necessarily mean that surgery is in your near future especially if you do not experience any side effects. However, when you have difficulty in breathing, nosebleeds, nasal congestions and frequent sinus infections, then your doctor may consider septoplasty surgery.
Take note that surgery is not the immediate option since your doctor will recommend medications and lifestyle changes to manage the symptoms. Medications include decongestants, antihistamines and prescription nasal cortisone sprays. Still, if your symptoms adversely affect quality of life and/or cannot be managed by medications, then surgery is the only effective option.
What Happens during Surgery?
Your general surgeon will reposition the nasal septum into the center of the nose. This way, the equality of the nasal cavities is restored, in a manner of speaking. Most of the time, parts of the septum will be removed before reinsertion into the proper position inside the nose. In some cases, septoplasty surgery is also accompanied by rhinoplasty. This time, your nose undergoes re-shaping procedures by readjusting its cartilage and bones ostensibly to make it more pleasant to look at.
During the surgery itself, you may be at risk for bleeding and infections, which are normal occurrences just as long as the doctor can adopt measures to control them. You will also be instructed to take care of your newly-operated nose mainly by not blowing it, not sneezing with your mouth open and not exerting any pressure on the organ itself. Plus, you have to deal with the inconvenience of a nasal splint or pack in your nostrils for a few days just until the operation heals.
What to Expect
After septoplasty surgery, the symptoms from the deviated septum usually clear away. You can now breathe easier, avoid sinus infections better and just be free of nosebleeds and nasal congestions, all other health considerations being equal. Still, you now have every reason to be careful about your nose. These precautionary measures include being careful when sneezing and blowing your nose as well as protecting it from accidents by wearing a helmet during contact sports, if your doctor still allows it.
Truly, a broken nose may be a sign of manliness - getting into fistfights and engaging in contact sports - but it is also cause for concern. See your doctor about the possibility for septoplasty surgery and rhinoplasty to fix the condition, if only for the sake of your general health.
