They can host their own web and use a professional team to design and manage their site. Collocation is one option that any business has for simple hosting to running their own web servers from a dedicated Internet connection.

The greatest advantage the small business has in using collocation services is that they can set up their server with the provider and share the provider's bandwidth which would then look as if it were there own. Sharing the bandwidth will cost the customer less but the hosting services may cost more. In some instances, the server machine can be rented from the provider. But whether you have your own or rent it, once it is set up it can be physically installed in the provider's location. You can then use your website as you would normally except that you now own the hardware.

Every business has its pros and cons and perhaps the biggest pro for small business in collocation is the savings on bandwidth. The biggest con or disadvantage is perhaps the monthly rate. The monthly rate is determined by the collocation provider based on the traffic coming through your website. If the traffic to your website increases so will the monthly rate increase accordingly. The only upside to that, is that higher traffic can sometimes mean more revenue, and if that is the case than the higher monthly rate becomes a moot issue.

There is always the issue of who really needs a collocation provider. If you are an individual with a small website or blog you do not need collocation services as a simple web hosting service would be sufficient. However, if you are a small or large business that is looking for a bigger and stronger Internet presence than collocation services are definitely for you. A collocation provider can not only give your small or large business a large Internet presence, but it will come with a large network connection.
