This article aims to demonstrate how to configure Parental Controls in Windows 7.

What can be controlled with Parental Controls?

The Parental Controls is a resource that is available in Windows since Windows Vista. With it you can limit the time children use the computer, when and what games and programs they can use and you can also block access to certain films and TV shows in Windows Media Center with the use Parental Controls.

Note

If your computer is connected to a domain, Parental Controls are not available.

You can use Parental Controls to set limits on the amount of hours that their children can use the computer, the types of games you can play and programs they can run.

Set time limits when children use the computer. You can set time limits to control when children are allowed to log on the computer. Time limits prevent children from logging on during the hours specified. You can set different logon hours for each day of the week. If they are connected when the allotted time is finished, will be automatically disconnected.

Prevent your children participate in games you do not want them to play. Control access to games, choose an age rating level, choose the content types you want to block and decide whether to allow or block specific games.

Do not let your kids run specific programs. Prevent children from running programs that you do not want them to run.

Setting Parental Controls

To activate Parental Controls follow the steps below:

1 - Click Start, Control Panel, User Accounts and Family Safety, then click Set up parental controls for any user. Window will be loaded as shown in Figure 1.1.

If you are prompted to enter an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

2 - Click on the default user account for which you want to set the Parental Controls. Window will be loaded as shown in Figure 1.2.

If a standard user account has not yet been set, click Create new user account to set a new account.

3 - Under Parental Controls, click On, enforce current settings and then click the OK button. Window will be loaded as shown in Figure 1.3.

4 - Click again on the account that you have enabled Parental Controls. Window will be loaded as shown in Figure 1.4.

5 - Time Limits. You can set time limits to control when children are allowed to log on the computer. Time limits prevent children from logging on during the hours specified. You can set different logon hours for each day of the week. If they are connected when the allotted time is finished, will be automatically disconnected. Click Time Limits. Window will be loaded as shown in Figure 1.5.

Click and drag the mouse pointer to set the hours and days of week you want to block or allow and then click the OK button.

6 - Games. You can control access to games, choose an age rating level, choose the content types you want to block and decide whether to allow or block unrated or specific games. Click on games. Window will be loaded as shown in Figure 1.6.

In "User" can play? Define whether the games will be allowed by selecting yes or no.

Block (or allow) games by rating and content type then click Set game ratings to select the best method for your child.

Block (or allow) any game on the computer by name click Block or Allow specific games to select the games to be allowed or blocked on the computer.

7 - Allow or block specific programs. You can prevent children from running programs you do not want them to run. Window will be loaded as shown in Figure 1.7.

What programs in "User" can use? Select the "User" can use all the programs to allow all programs to be used or "User" can use only allowed programs to select which programs are allowed. After selecting the desired option, click the OK button.
