Setting Realistic Expectations for Mentees
When it comes to business coaching, unfortunately a lot of mentees end up having
overly farfetched expectations which their business coaches are often unable to fulfill. While the mentees themselves may often be blamed for this state of affairs, the fact is that to a large extent, matters lie in the hands of the business coaches as well.
Specifically, when it comes to business development coaching, it is imperative that these coaches undertake effective expectation management; neither should their mentees expect too much from them, nor should they expect too little.
In particular, when it comes to expectation management, coaches must ensure that their mentees do not expect miracles or magic from them. Say for instance, a business which is completely in doldrums or bankrupt; even the best of business coaches may not be able to revive the same, else Lehman Brothers may well have still been in the reckoning!
Thus, as you can clearly see, expectation management is key to effective business coaching.
Now, how do you go about this effective management of expectations? Essentially, it has to do with understanding the problems of your clients in a suitable manner and then suggesting feasible solutions for the same. These solutions have to be practical and realistic; they cannot be a concoction of what worked for other clients as the same may simply not be relevant to them, in the very first place! Further, you need to set a realistic time frame for the resolution of the business problems of your clients. Remember that most overnight or short term solutions simply do not work; they have to be given an adequate time frame within which to set forth their effectiveness.
At the same time, your solutions must be deployable and the solutions should come forth in front of your clients, within the time frame that you expect them to start showing results. Too much time taken, may in turn lead to disillusionment among your mentees; a situation which is just as undesirable to you as having too many expectations right at the outset.
Thus, overall, as you can clearly see, it is all about optimal expectation management, with the keyword here of course being optimal - neither too much nor too less. Remember that this is what will prove to be your long term savior, as far as effective and successful business coaching is concerned.
