Setting Up Your Home-Based Network Marketing Blog
This guide is going to show you how to start a self-hosted Wordpress blog for your home-based network marketing business using HostGator. I chose HostGator for many reasons: cheap hosting, good support, a nice affiliate program, and it's super-easy to set up. There are many advantages to self-host your own blog. In fact, I consider it necessary for network marketers. Here are the three reasons why:
1. You'll want a Professional-looking URL (instead of a Wordpress or Blogger subdomain)
2. You're safe from company mergers and other changes in the business climate.
3. You'll have much more freedom to customize your blog.
Let's get into the nitty-gritty.
Creating Your Blog Database:
1. Go to HostGator.com. Look over and choose a hosting plan.
2. Register a domain name. Most people include their name; others use a business name. If you know how to conduct keyword research, you may want to include a keyphrase to target.
3. After you pick out a hosting plan and register a domain, HostGator will email you a Cpanel link and password. Save this Email for future use! Login to CPanel.
4. Click on Fantastico De Luxe. It's the smiley face icon located under "software/services".
5. Click on "Wordpress", then "New Installation".
6. Fill out the Username and Password information. This is also where you will enter your site name.
7. Verify the information and bookmark the admin URL.
8. Login to Wordpress!
Alright! You now have a blog! Now it's time to spruce it up a bit and put in your recommended settings. Don't be scared to experiment with different themes and settings. Be creative! I would recommend that you check what your site looks like after every adjustment so you can easily change it back if it's not what you wanted.
Blog Theme and Settings:
1. Choose A Theme. You can do this a couple different ways. You can check out hundreds of themes by going to appearance->themes->install themes. You can also find themes by searching for them on Google. (e.g "new wordpress themes")
2. Go Through Settings. Most of the default settings are all right as is but you can customize if you wish. Remember, you can change these at anytime.
3. Change permalink structure. This is important for SEO.(Settings ->Permalinks-> custom structure->/%postname%/
4. Adjust your Theme's appearance until you are satisfied. Go to Appearance->Your Theme's Options
5. Wordpress has a drag-and-drop system where you can add different elements or "widgets" to your sidebar. Some widgets include: archives, meta tags, calendar, recent posts, a tabbed sidebar, etc. You'll also be able to add your opt-in form as a widget. At this point, go to the widget area and experiment putting widget elements in different areas. You will have a better idea of what widgets to add as your blog develops.
