The first diamond engagement ring was given a few centuries ago and was simply a rough stone, with none of the fancy cutting techniques that are employed today. The most popular diamonds are the brilliant cut diamonds because they bring out the sparkle that people most admire in a diamond.

Diamonds have long been connected with romance and there is certainly plenty of romance surrounding marquise cut diamonds. This rather elegant, elongated oval shape is rumoured to have been created for the Marquise de Pompadour, by no less a man than King Louis XIV. He had it cut in this elongated oval shape simply because that shape resembled the almost perfect mouth of the Marquise de Pompadour.

Apart from their dazzling shape, marquise cut diamond rings are a variation on the excellent brilliant cut, that brings out so much fire and brilliance from a stone. This shape will give the illusion that the wearers fingers are longer and slimmer than they actually are. Another illusion that this remarkable brilliant cut diamond produces is the illusion that it is a bigger diamond than it actually is. Compared to any other diamond shape of the same carat, the marquise cut has a larger crown surface area, which maximises the diamonds perceived size.

Size isnt everything though and it is important that when you choose a marquise cut diamond that you make sure it has excellent symmetry. The two points should align exactly, whilst each side should be a mirror image of the other. Failure to achieve this perfect symmetry will make the diamond look odd when it is in its final setting.

Another thing to look out for, when choosing a marquise cut diamond, is the severity of the bowtie effect that is usually produced in a brilliant cut stone. A very good marquise cut with perfect symmetry should yield a nearly invisible bowtie effect, whilst less proficient cuts will produce quite a severe bowtie effect.

Because the two points of the marquise cut were nearest the edge of the rough stone, it is possible that they may have flaws and so prongs should always be set to protect these two potentially weak areas at the points.
