SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, can be a difficult and time consuming process. And unless you're an expert in the field, it can be almost impossible to get your head around.

Luckily though, the basics of SEO are much simpler than you might think. And in seven relatively easy steps, you'll be well on the way to search engine success.

So take some notes, and follow these instructions - you'll see more traffic, more enquiries and more sales from your website.

1: URL

The first thing to look at is your website's URL. If you want to rank for your service (ie: Search Engine Consultants), then you need to have that service in your URL. However, if you're an established brand and wish to use your company name (ie FirstFound), you should add that to your URL. Having a good, keyword rich internet address sets you apart from the competition and puts you well on the way to SEO success.

2: Titles

The first thing the search engines see after your URL is the website's title tags. So now you're going to need to edit your title. Try and get the exact phrase that you're targeting in there, and remember: Important words go at the front!

3: Meta

The next thing to worry about is the site's Meta Data. Found in the HTML code of your website, these lines of code give the search engines an idea of what your website is about. The most important of these is your Meta Description - which needs to contain your key phrase - but the site's Meta Keywords do need some attention too, despite the fact that they're not used by Google.

4: Content

Content is King! Or so the popular mantra goes. As it happens, Links are King, but content is still very important. Value should be your watchword - make sure that your pages give clients and search engines alike something valuable to read. If needs be, ask a professional to write the content for you.

5: Internal Links

Good internal links and a sitemap help your clients and the search engine crawlers navigate around your site. Without them, pages won't be seen and vistors, both human and bot, will become lost. And lost visitors don't buy things and don't give you good rankings.

6: External Links

Backlinks from good quality websites will help your ranking. Thousands of websites and articles give you tips and hints on how to generate and source backlinks, but article submission sites such as articlesbase are always a good place to start.

7: Patience

This is the most important of all. If you want instant results, choose a Pay Per Click campaign. Otherwise you'll have to sit tight and be patient.
