Several Tips On Making Silk Effect Water Photography
Water is an important material of photography
, the photos of drops, rivers, ponds, and the sea can be seen everywhere. If you are interested in these photos, you may have noticed that some photos of the river or falls have an effect of silk. How could they do that?
Using a slow shutter speed can capture the whole screen of exposure screen, the silky flowing water is using the principle of slow shutter.
Silky water shooting skills
First, determine the composition by the direction of the trend. If shooting vertical waterfall I would recommend a vertical composition to allow the screen more compact. If shooting streams from left to right, I recommend the lateral composition. Dont sure about vertical or lateral? If it is difficult to decide, you can shoot both of them and decide which one is better.
Be sure to use a tripod. To shoot silk-like water, based on my experience, the shutter speed at least slower than 1/4 seconds. It is impossible to handheld a camera at a so slow shutter speed, so be sure to use a tripod. Plus with a humid climate, slippery standing place, and sometimes you may need to stand in water, using the tripod can make your shooting at ease.
Adjust the shutter at least less than 1/4 s. In order to increase the success rate, as well as the sense of movement your favorite, it is recommended to use the bracketing. For example, take the shutter speed of 2 seconds, 4 seconds, 6 seconds, etc. Or simply setting a good bracketing interval, coupled with the automatic continuous shooting, shoot three different photos. Then use a small aperture, to capture all of the details and slower shutter speed, such as F16, ISO 100 in order to get the most detailed texture.
Consider of using CPL. Polarizer has two functions: reduce light, slower shutter speed: remove the stray light and reflection, including the reflection of the water, so that the screen brightening. But some people believe that the picture will be more vibrant if without it. Of course, it depends on your favor, try both of them.
Use the self-timer or cable release. Remember, using the camera's self-timer function or an external shutter release the shutter is released absolutely more stable than pressing the shutter with your finger. Success or failure often depends on that moment, you would not want the whole picture blurred when the vibration of the shutter.
Beside the tips above, if you can add some interesting things while shooting a stream or waterfall, it will be a good idea. Using a rock, a flower as the foreground and the waterfalls as background will make your works more wonderful. Just imagine the floating maple leaf, the silky water, and shiny sunshine, wouldnt they are all of a great photo?
