Sew Custom Shower Curtain And Coordinating Towels
Sometimes when you know exactly what you want when you are decorating a room it can
be very frustrating, especially if you cannot find what you are looking for, whether you are shopping for contemporary abstract wall art, handcrafted wall sculptures, copper wall decor or even something ordinary, like bathroom accessories. When shopping for a shower curtain, it can be hard to find the perfect one; and then when you do find it, the cost is prohibitive.
Making a Shower Curtain from a Sheet.
The optimal sheet to use for a shower curtain is a full-size flat-bed sheet; you can't use a fitted sheet for this project. This allows enough extra fabric for the curtain to drape as it hangs. Due to the fact that the sheet is already hemmed, and may even already have a decorative top, there is very little sewing to do at all for this DIY project.
There are several ways that you can go about connecting your sheet to the shower rod. You can simply use the top pocket as a shower rod pocket and run the rod through there. For the purpose of fitting the rod through the pocket, you will need to snip the side seams. If you choose to go in this direction, your shower curtain liner will require an additional rod.
You may also consider putting the decorative hem at the bottom of the shower curtain and putting grommets in the top to hang the curtain from the rod. If you opt to fold the top of the sheet over three inches toward the back and iron it flat three times, you will get fabric that is three times as thick to mount the grommets. You can locate grommets at any craft store or hardware store. To install them simply cut a slit in the fabric, insert the bottom of the grommet and hammer the top piece on. This makes for a professional looking shower curtain. Depending on your preference, you can put the grommets through the decorative edge of the sheet and then merely hem the bottom. There is actually no correct or incorrect way to complete this project.
You are now ready to position the shower curtain hooks through the grommet holes, add a shower curtain liner, and hang your new creation on your shower rod. Your grommet holes should be around six inches apart from each other so that you have a sufficient number of hooks to properly support both the liner and the curtain.
Fun and Easy Coordinating Towels.
To create your matching towels, select two towels in a matching color and use the pillowcases to cut a strip of matching fabric. Cut the strip four times wider than you want the completed strip to be. Now fold in of the fabric along each edge, and then fold the strip in half and iron. Next, simply sew the strip of fabric along the towels' edges and you now have a matching shower curtain and set of towels.
