Shahid Kapoor was born on 25th February 1981. His parents Pankaj Kapoor and Neelima Azeem divorced when he was three years old and after that he lived alone with his mother. Shahid maternal grandfather was Anwar Azeem, a noted Marxist journalist and Urdu author.
His great grandfather was K. A. Abbas, a filmmaker, screenwriter, journalist, and Urdu novelist and the grandson of Hali, chief protege of Urdu poet, Ghalib. Shahid studied at Rajhans Vidyalaya in Mumbai. As a teenager, he acted in acted in ad films and music videos.
His most popular music video was Aankhon mein tera hi chehra, by the band Aryans. He starred in it alongside his childhood sweetheart Hrishita Bhatt. When he was 18, he acted in a TV commercial for Pepsi, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukherjee.
During this time, Shahid also joined Shaimak Davar Institute For Performing Arts (SDIPA). He is a trained dancer and appeared with the rest of Shaimak Davar background dancers in Taal (1999) and Dil To Pagal Hai (1999). Shahid Kapoor made his debut with Ken Ghosh ISHQ VISHK (2003). The movie was a love story and he was paired opposite Amrita Rao and Shenaz Treasurywala.
Shahid performance as a carefree college student who later falls in love was well appreciated. His chemistry with Vishal Malhotra, who played the role of his best friend, was also sparkling. Shahid won the Filmfare Award in the category of Best Male Debut for this movie.
In 2004, Shahid second movie FIDA, also directed by Ken Ghosh was released. He starred alongside Kareena Kapoor and Fardeen Khan. The movie failed at the box office. His second release in 2004 Dil Maange More, opposite Ayesha Takia, Tulip Joshi and Soha Ali Khan, also failed to do well at the box office.
In 2005, Shahid acted in SHIKHAR, starring Ajay Devgan, Amrita Rao and Bipasha Basu. The movie was critically acclaimed and Shahid was nominated for Star Screen Award for Best Actor. His other films like deewane huye paagal (2004), vaah! life ho to aisi (2005), 36 china town (2005), and CHUP Chup Ke (2006) did not do well at the box office.
In 2006, Shahid acted in Sooraj Barjatya Vivah, opposite Amrita Rao. It was a love story between two individuals who are engaged and to be married. The film garnered positive reviews. Shahid was lauded for his superb acting. This film was one of the highest grossing films of 2006. Shahid earned a nomination for Best Actor at Star Screen Awards.
In 2007, Shahid first release was Fool n final, which failed at the box office. His second release that year was Jab we met, opposite Kareena Kapoor. Jab we met directed by Imtiaz Ali, was a super hit. Shahid received rave reviews for his mature performance.
This film showcased Shahid growth as an actor and he was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Actor and several other awards at various award ceremonies. Shahid next movie was Kismat konnection (2008), opposite Vidya Balan. However the film didnt live up to its expectations and failed at the box office.
In 2009, Shahid acted in Vishal Bharadwaj KAMINEY. This was Shahid Kapoor toughest role till date and he played the dual role of twins Guddu and Charlie. The film was a commercial success as well as critically acclaimed. Shahid was required to lisp and stammer for the roles of Guddu and Charlie. His hard work was visible onscreen.
His other release in 2009 was Yash Raj Films Dil Bole Haddipa! Alongside Rani Mukherjee. The film didnt do well at the box office. In 2010, Shahid Acted In Ken Ghosh Chance Pe Dance, Opposite Genelia Douza And Paathshala, Opposite Ayesha Takia.
Both films failed at the box office. His last releases in 2010, were yash raj films badmaash company and milenge milenge, the long delayed movie produced by Boney Kapoor. Badmaash Company Was An Average Hit. Milenge Milenge Failed At The Box Office.
Currently Shahid is shooting for his father Pankaj Kapoor directorial debut Mausam, opposite Sonam Kapoor. It is slated for release in 2011. Shahid is a vegetarian. He shares a cordial relationship with his father Pankaj Kapoor and stepmother Supriya Pathak.
He has three half siblings, Sanah, Ruhaan and Ishaan Khattar. Ishaan has acted with Shahid in a film called, Vaah! Life ho to aisi (2005). Shahid was dating actress Kareena Kapoor for three years. The started dating each other in 2004, while filming Fida.
However, they separated in 2007, while filming Jab We Met, their biggest hit together.
