The idea behind the monokini is to highlight parts of a woman's body through the use of the cut out sections. These cut outs are mostly around the upper stomach area and sides. The hips and lower stomach typically remain covered, which is especially flattering to the body because those are usually problem areas for women.

Monokinis are known for the detail and embellishment put into their designs. Chains, ruffles, beads, jewels, sequins, metallic pieces, and other decorations are common. No other swimwear is designed with as many accents as monokinis.

Some monokinis feature patterns, but most are solid colors. Often, colors that make a bold contrast are used. Black and white are popular color choices for a monokini. Black is a slimming color, and black swimsuits are sexy no matter what the style. White shows off tan skin well. The only thing to keep in mind about white swimsuits is that some will become transparent in water. Choosing a monokini color or pattern is all about personal taste. Whatever you think looks good is what you should wear; you'll be more confident knowing you like the look of what you're wearing.

The only downside of the monokini is that because of its revealing nature, it isn't the best choice for athletic activities. However, it more than makes up for that with how customizable it is. Monokinis are all about fashion, so many women accessorize them to a much greater extent than they would any other kind of swimsuit. Necklaces and bracelets with wooden beads or metallic coins are often seen paired with monokinis. It's even considered acceptable to wear heels or wedge shoes with a monokini, something that would rarely be done with a one piece or even a bikini.

All it takes to rock a monokini is confidence, a great body, and style. It helps if you don't mind stares, either. If you think you're ready, slip on a monokini and head to the beach for a swimsuit experience you'll greatly enjoy.
