A revered monument that is much loved by locals and tourists, the Sheesh Mahal has captured the hearts of many. Travelling around the premises, one could see its exquisite designs and intricate architecture; an impressive feature of a structure that was only built during the 17th century by the illustrious Maharaja Narinder Singh. A distinguished personality and a patron to the creative field of literature and art, he chose many skilled and talents painters from Rajasthan and Kangra to showcase great paintings inside the palace as form of interior decoration.

Perhaps its most remarkable feature, the paintings on the walls of the Sheesh Mahal stand out amongst its other features. Housing a myriad of carefully and adeptly painted works of art, the paintings have been influenced by mythology, legends and literature, which have been passed on from one generation to the next. Among the many artistic masterpieces that could be seen in the palace, most of the paintings seem to encapsulate the poetry of Surdas, Bihari and Keshav. Similar to the words on a page coming alive, the paintings perfectly capture the essence of the poems, forming a visible vision for everyone to see. Other paintings portray the works of Nayak-Nayika, Bara-masa and Raga-Ragni. Decorating the ceilings as well, the Sheesh Mahal depicts vibrant floral designs and a rich interior, which represents a kaleidoscopic imagery of illuminating lights of bright vivid colours. A stunning vision to see, its much-loved Kangra-style miniatures are another alluring attraction, which renders a sense of astonishment at the displays of Geet Govind, one of the epic poems by Jaidev.

The Palace of Mirrors or the Sheesh Mahal as it is referred to by many locals draws its name from its mirror work, which could be seen in a particular section of the palace. Showcasing exquisite designs of glasswork, it is undoubtedly one of the rarest sights that one could experience.

Surrounded by a forest, the Sheesh Mahal has many gardens, terraces and fountains. In addition, it has an artificial lake, which encompasses two different watchtowers. Each watchtower, both in the south and north are connected to a repository called Banasar Ghar. Originally a residential palace, it has a suspension bridge, similar to the one at Rishikesh called Lakshman Jhoola.

In addition, there is a museum, a medal gallery and a rare collection of coins, which is probably one of the best numismatic collections in the world. The museum showcases an assortment of fine art, ivory carvings, wooden carved furniture and carved objects from Tibet, Punjab, Burmese and Kashmiri respectively. Furthermore, it houses some rare manuscripts and portraits of the rulers of Patiala. The Medal Gallery houses the largest number of medals in the globe, having around 3200 medals. Showcasing awards from around the world, the medals were collected by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, whose son gifted the priceless compilation to the Punjab Government Museum.
