Introduction

Press brake bending is a commonly used process for sheet metal part fabrication. It has been observed that the final bend angle, which is the angle achieved upon removal of the punch, is smaller than the initial bend angle. This spring back is due to the elastic recovery of the sheet metal. This article is focusing on role of coin bending process in sheet metal.

Background

Many operators encounter inexplicable troubles throughout their daily bending operation. For example, the intended product was not produced-it lost its shape, it was out of the required dimensional tolerance, or it had scores and cracks in the bent part. Perplexed with incomprehensible troubles, some may have uttered that bending is difficult and beyond their comprehension.

Sheet metals such as steel, stainless steel, and aluminum should bend easily when pressed with a die and punch mounted in a bending machine, as long as the specified requirements are met. This bending phenomenon is recognized as quite a natural event, due to the fact that one can actually see the sheet metal bend. Then it does not seem that sheet metal bending is complicated and difficult. However, sheet metal bending is not as simple as it appears.

Description

Various theoretical models have been proposed to predict the spring back using the tooling geometry and the known properties of the sheet metal. However, in a production environment, the actual properties of any given work piece may vary from the nominal properties of the lot. This variation causes the actual spring back to deviate from the theoretical predictions. A paper suggested a practical incremental bending methodology to control punch displacement to achieve more accurate final bend angles. In that proposed approach, work piece properties are estimated from measured loaded and unloaded bend angles. The estimated properties are used to determine the final punch position required to obtain the desired bend angle after spring back. A series of bending experiments was performed. It was found that the proposed method can better predict springback and effectively control the bend angle variation in a production environment.

Conclusion

In the research of above proposed approach, we found that it is only suitable for small capacity and bending precession may not be satisfactory. Nevertheless, coin-bending process is suitable for large capacity and extremely high bending precession can be obtained. It is better to use coin bending instead of air bending.
