The stately Sheikh Zayed Mosque, the largest in the UAE and 8th largest on the globe, is undoubtedly one of the most resplendent sights in the desert emirate of Abu Dhabi. Constructed using only the finest materials sourced from various parts of the world, this magnificent building is an imposing memorial to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and first President of the United Arab Emirates. A multitude of domes cover the main section of the building and courtyard. At the four extremities of the mosque compound four lofty minarets rise 115 m into the heavens. The mosque compound is large enough to accommodate no less than 40,000 of the faithful, with the principal prayer hall capable of housing 9,000 worshippers. Special sections are designated for the use of women.

The architecture of the mosque is considered to be a fusion of Mughal, Arabic and Moorish design elements. Casablanca's Hassan II Mosque and the Badshahi Mosque in Lahore are often cited as strong influences. The floor plan and dome layout of the mosque in particular are considered to be inspired by the Badshahi Mosque. Meanwhile the minarets are regarded as being of typical Arab design, and the archways as displaying characteristically Moorish motifs.

No expense has been spared in the construction of the mosque making it one of the most resplendent buildings in the world. It is primarily composed of pure marble, sourced from as far away as Macedonia. Many columns adorned with mother of pearl, semi-precious stones and fancy jasper are found in the mosque. The sheer majesty of the mosque never fails to awe and impress the beholder.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque has the distinction of containing the largest chandelier in the world; one of seven obtained from Germany, each an exquisite copper and gold plated creation.

The mosque also boasts the largest carpet in the world, meticulously created in Iran by 1,200 weaving artisans, 30 workers and 20 technicians. The beautifully designed carpet weighs no less than 47 tons.
