Shingles Disorder - Are Shingles Contagious?

Before discussing about whether Shingles are contagious let's give a short description about Shingles

. This is a disease commonly identified as Herpes Zoster. It is a different type of infection caused by virus infecting our central nervous system. The most common symptoms are skin rash which are very painful followed by blisters concentrated in few area inside our body, especially in a stripe. The blisters are transformed into scabs with the Shingles attact; it is at this point that Shingles becomes contagious.

Now the main question arises: are shingles contagious?

Shingles become contagious only to those persons who were not infected with chickenpox in the past. Thus a person will be easily infected with chickenpox when he comes in close contact with person with shingles having rash and sores. However, no one can be infected with shingles from others. Chicken pox virus is the main cause of shingles that stay dormant in human body from the time they suffered from chickenpox. Shingles crop up only when such virus causing chickenpox comes to life in a body.

* But if anyone already suffered from chickenpox in the past, are Shingles Contagious to them still

You should not be worried about how contagious or transmittable it is as no person will be affected by the virus unless he is in close contact with broken blisters of the infected person. If you did not suffer from chickenpox in the past, you can prevent yourself from such disease by getting vaccines.

* Are shingles contagious if I am the patient and kissing some one?

Shingles virus can only stay in a living human being. This virus is transited from the infected person to a healthy one from an infected skin and mouth or eyes and genital organs. As virus are active in the saliva of the patient or skin lesions and nasal secretions as well. The virus is also found active in vaginal secretions as well as faeces. So avoid such activities like kissing when you are in the contagious phase.

* Are shingles contagious if I involve in activities like love making?

It is highly recommend not involving yourself in such activities as in close contact with an infected person, you can catch the virus. Condom is utmost necessity if you really want to.

* Are shingles contagious while I am swimming?

You will be suggested not to swim around as it is contagious and can affect others. Cases are seen about few people who got shingles while bathing in the pool or open sea. Get shingles is in fact a miserable and painful experience when you will be in draining state physically. Weakness and exhausted feelings are common. Proper medications can lessen the pain, and takes longer time for you to heal from such disease.
