Short Trips Should Be Done With Our Legs

In another attempt to make Britain healthier, the governments health ministers are

pushing people to not use their cars on short journeys but to walk or cycle instead. Now that obesity threatens as much danger to the nation as smoking does, the leading health advisory body in the UK is challenged with tackling the problem. They are strongly advocating the government take several major steps to help persuade people that the healthier alternatives are better, a hard sell when the easier option - driving ones car - is so habitual and both more comfortable and convenient.

One of the main steps is to improve the availability of safe walking and cycling routes. This entails advancing the pavements around city centres as well as widening cycle paths, where they are already existent, or putting in applications for the inclusion of a new cycle path. Their hope is that with better cycle paths and walkways the public will be more inclined to forego the car in favour of their bike or good old fashioned legs. However the issue of our nations inactivity is thoroughly engrained into society.

Nearly 60% of males in Britain and almost 75% of females do not have active enough lifestyles to maintain a healthy weight and level of fitness. Dr Harry Rutter, the National Obesity Observatorys key advisor stated that Only a minority of people in England get enough physical activity to improve their health. This results in the people being more susceptible to illness and a significantly lower quality of life. Unfortunately the majority of these people are not aware of this issue, let alone the massive scale of it.

What is needed is the revolutionising of our lifestyles, but most of society lacks the time, energy and even motivation to make the essential drastic changes to how they live on a day-to-day basis. Including frequent physical activity in our lives such as cycling or walking when it would so much swifter and easier to drive, requires a lot of effort and self-control. The Department of Health are going to continue encouraging adults, especially parents, to walk or cycle to the office, or when taking their children to school, or popping to the shops for a pint of milk. Taking these recurrent trips as opportunities to stretch their legs and get some exercise rather than simply getting in the car, and to integrate them into the daily routine.

The report centres around putting pressure on local authorities and district councils to develop achievable long term plans to increase their inhabitants active travel. Schools are being recommended to supply secure bike sheds and to start up a walking buses scheme. This is when a gaggle of pupils walk to and from school supervised by a teacher - therefore also aiding the staff to walk to work as well; its proved a popular system in other areas of the country.
