Short battery life hampers otherwise impressive 3DS
Even with increasingly stiff competition from the likes of Apple's iPod touch, Sony's PlayStation Portable and smartphones in general, Nintendo has managed to stay on top of its game when it comes to portable play.
In fact, with 145 million units sold to date, the Nintendo DS is the best-selling hand-held game system in history and is about to eclipse the 152 million unit-selling PlayStation 2 as the best-selling video game console overall.
Not to rest on its laurels, Nintendo has just launched the Nintendo 3DS ($249.99), the latest in the Japanese giant's arsenal to ward off rival threats.
The verdict? While not a perfect machine, it appears they've got another successful system for kids and kids at heart. HP KS524AA battery
The hardware
Resembling the existing clamshell Nintendo DS system at first glance, the 3DS available in Cosmo Black or Aqua Blue, to start is the first gaming system capable of displaying 3-D visuals. And no special glasses are required to see the effect.
That is, the bottom screen remains touch-sensitive like its predecessor. Players can use the bundled stylus pen or a fingertip to control the action, but the top screen shows 3-D graphics to the naked eye, resulting in remarkable depth and objects that appear to jump off the screen.
A small slider on the right side of the unit lets you increase or decrease the 3-D intensity (or select none at all). Nintendo says gamers age 6 or under should not play in 3-D as their eyes are still in the developmental stages.
Speaking of 3-D, the Nintendo 3DS has a built-in two-lens camera that can take stereoscopic 3-D photos which should prove fun for those who'd like to take pictures of friends, family and pets and a second 2-D camera facing the user for self-portraits. The outer-facing camera also works in combination with the 3DS's built-in motion sensors for use in "augmented reality" games. More on this in a moment.
Finally, to help control the action, the 3DS has an analog stick for your left thumb for the first time on a portable Nintendo system, as well as a control pad and familiar A, B, X, Y and shoulder buttons.
Be aware, however, the unit feels heavier than its predecessors and HP pavilion DV2000 battery life for 3-D games is a disappointing 2.5 to 3 hours between charges. For 2-D games, battery life is between 7 and 8 hours.
The software
As with other Nintendo video game systems, players can expect a lot of first- and third-party games created by Nintendo and other companies, too.
Highlights at launch include Nintendo's "Nintendogs + Cats" (a pet simulation game that has you care for animals), Capcom's creepy "Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3-D" (a zombie shooter), Nintendo's "Steel Diver" (a submarine adventure) and Ubisoft's "Asphalt" (a car racing game with tight controls). Later in the year, Nintendo fans can expect 3-D remakes of games starring "Kid Icarus" and Link from "The Legend of Zelda" series.
Older Nintendo DS game cartridges and content downloaded from the DSi Shop both work on the Nintendo 3DS, but the machine won't up-convert the titles to 3-D. A 2-Gigabyte SD memory card also is included with the 3DS to store music (MP3 or AAC) and other files.
One of the underrated features of the 3DS is its ability to play augmented reality games ones that superimpose digital imagery on top of the real environment when viewed through the 3DS camera. When you look at the top screen of the 3DS, these virtual objects are meshed with the physical world. Players will find six cards in the 3DS box each with a special code used to play augmented reality games, such as "AR Shooter" and "Face Raiders." Great fun.
Along with Wi-Fi support for head-to-head play and downloadable content, the 3DS features a couple new wireless services: SpotPass, to wirelessly receive new content pushed to the device; and StreetPass, which allows you to exchange game info with other nearby 3DS systems.
Nintendo recently announced 3-D movies will also be viewable on the 3DS via the Netflix streaming service ($7.99/month).
Summary
The poor HP COMPAQ 6910p battery performance will likely disappoint gamers on road trips or plane rides. If you find yourself in these situations, be sure to switch to 2-D so the unit will last longer.
But the impressive 3-D effect, large catalog of launch titles and augmented reality technology make the Nintendo 3DS a fascinating entertainment solution for gamers on the go.
