Should I Bet Exactas Or Quinielas At The Greyhound Track?

Which is a better bet, quinielas or exactas? Well

, if you're a horseplayer, you probably lean toward exactas, because they're a horse player's bet. But many greyhound handicappers don't even pay attention to exactas. They think they're just "straight quinielas".

This isn't true. Exactas, although like quinielas the first two dogs to cross the finish line - are very different from quinielas at some tracks. For one thing, they may have a completely different takeout, which affects the payout enormously.

Most bettors don't even realize that the track takeout - the amount of money that tracks can deduct from each bet's payoff - can be different depending on the track and also on the type of bet.

Win, place and show bets usually have a smaller takeout than exotic bets. This is, in part, because tracks believe that bettors who hit the higher paying exotic bets aren't so likely to notice or mind that more is taken out for the track's percentage.

Whether this is true or not, it's the norm for at least five states that I know of and there may be more. So how do you tell what your track's takeout is for quinielas and exactas? You ask a racing official at the customer service desk or you call the track and ask until you get an answer.

But just knowing what the takeout is doesn't tell you whether quinielas or exactas pay off better at your track. To find out that, you have to do some research. First, go over some old programs and list the payoff for quinielas and exactas in each race.

Then, subtract the cost of the bets from the winnings and see which type of bet would have paid more over the long run. I prefer to use at least 100 programs or 200 when I do research of any kind.

Even then, I scrutinize the races and if there are some that are atypically high or low paying, I throw them out. Sometimes, results can be skewed if you don't concentrate on what's most likely to happen, not what might happen once in a long while.

This research should tell you which bet is best at your track. Try it with the exactas straight and then boxed. This should give you a very good idea of whether it would be more rewarding to bet quinielas or exactas and whether you should box the exacta bets as a backup.
