Should I Buy An Off The Shelf Desktop Computer Or Have One Built To My Specifications?

When you are making the decision to get a computer there are many things to look at and several ways to go about it

. What are the best desktop computers for your needs? Should you buy an off the shelf desktop computer or one that has been put together with you in mind? Let us examine some of the options and why one may be the way for you to go while another may not.

What is important is which one will fit in with your particular needs. Let's examine some of the good and bad points about both ways of getting a new computer.

You may know what you want or need as far as capabilities go but have no idea as to what parts to buy or what they do. In this case think about purchasing ready made. Computer components can be confusing and compatibility issues can make your head spin. Many computer "packages" can be discovered as you shop around that will give results that are very close to what you would get if you customized on your own.

Another factor to look at here is price. Assembling the parts as you go along may be less costly but if you are looking for something basic for simple internet surfing or email, then a simple computer with little or few bells and whistles can be purchased ready made, very inexpensively.

Perhaps building a computer is not something you want to tackle. Big box stores as well as department stores are now carrying basic computers with very competitive pricing. If you are looking for a simple way to get online, surf the web and send emails, these are an easy and affordable way to go. And if you are looking for something more, (perhaps faster or with more capabilities), computer manufacturers offer packages and even some customization when you buy from them.

Time and convenience can be a big factor as you make your decision. Even if it does save you money do you have the time to put it all together? Or would you rather have the ease of going into a store and picking out what you need, bringing it home the same night and getting it set up immediately? While in the store you will have clerks or technicians to answer your questions. And your store or catalogue bought computer will most likely come with guarantees or warranties. You won't get that if you put it together yourself. This is not to say that the individual parts on your home made computer will not have warranties with them, but they probably will not be as comprehensive as a total computer warranty would be. And you will be dealing with compatibility issues with several different companies.

Going into a computer store and looking at all of the great machines available can be a great experience. There are techs there that can answer your questions and help you choose what you need. And bringing your new computer home that night and getting it set up may be more appealing to some than the effort of putting one together. However, a computer that you make yourself can give you loads of satisfaction. And if you have the time and knowledge to put it all together you can look on it with pride and have confidence that the attributes you need will be there.

The best desktop computers are those that meet the needs of the people that use them. With our computers being so personal these days, it behoves us to examine our needs so that when you ask your self the question, "Should I Buy An Off The Shelf Desktop Computer, or have one put together from scratch?", the answer will be easy to come to.
