Should I Get Tumescent Liposuction?

Liposuction (also known as lipoplasty and suction lipectomy) is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the world

. In America alone, hundreds of thousands of people undergo this surgery every year. For twelve out of the past thirteen years, the procedure has topped the charts as the number one cosmetic surgery in America, and lipoplasty is similarly popular in a number of other areas throughout the world.

One thing that not everyone knows is that there are actually a number of different ways of performing a lipoplasty. Since the surgery was invented in the 70's, it has been under more or less constant change. As time has gone on, people have developed new technologies and new techniques to help to surgically remove fat.

A number of the newer techniques use all sorts of impressive gadgets such as lasers, ultrasonic wave emitters, infrasonic vibrators and pressurized water jets. What with all these new, high tech options, it might surprise some people to find that the most commonly performed method of liposuction is one that was developed in the mid 80's.

The tumescent method was invented sometime around 1985 by a California surgeon, and it takes its name from the word "tumesce," which means to swell or become firm. In a tumescent lipoplasty, large amounts of fluids are introduced into the target area. These fluids contain medicines such as pain killers and agents which help to minimize blood loss.

The large amounts of fluid which are put into the target area cause the fatty tissue of the target area to swell up or "tumesce." The newly swollen fat is much easier to remove, and it affords the surgeon a much greater degree of control.

When it was first introduced, the tumescent method made it possible to perform much more precise surgeries and to produce more delicate results than had previously been possible. The tumescent method also helpd liposuction to move from requiring general anesthesia to being performed under local anesthetic.

Although the surgery isn't quite as new and high tech as some of its current competitors, one thing that tumescent lipoplasty can boast of is that it has far more experience. Doctors have been performing the surgery for longer, so they frequently know how the equipment works better. Also, there is a larger wealth of research and knowledge regarding the risks, side effects and likely outcomes of tumescent lipo than with just about any other method.
