Should I Go to a Main Dealer for Servicing?

Should I Go to a Main Dealer for Servicing?

If you own a car or a truck, you really have but three choices when it comes time for regular scheduled maintenance, or repairs. Your first choice is for sure the most affordable and that's to do the work yourself if you have the knowledge, and the tools. Now keep in mind that diagnostics tools for today's vehicles have become far more complex and expensive though.

Then after that it all comes down to the big two and those are to take your vehicle to a neighbourhood mechanic shop or to take it to the main dealer. A car lot that specializes in selling and servicing your particular make of vehicle and of course both of these choices come with their own pros and cons.

For instance you may be able to get a better hourly price from your local mechanic, which is a definite benefit. Just the same though keep in mind that this rule is definitely not chiselled in stone and this particularly holds true if your local neighbourhood mechanic is prone to overcharging.

In general though because a dealer who specializes in your make will tend to hire formally trained mechanics who draw higher wages you will have to pay a higher hourly rate. Keep in mind though that this of course means that the person working under your hood at a main dealer will tend to be more knowledgeable.

In fact he or she will be a specialist with regards to the model of vehicle you drive' but there's more. The mechanic at your local dealers shop will be familiar with any mechanical eccentricities that your particular make may have; little quirks that most vehicles have that can pop up and become a problem.

Still one more consideration is parts. Now keep in mind that the older a vehicle gets' the harder it can be to get parts for it and some makes and models are worse than other in this respect. A main dealer will always have parts dialled in for the make you drive and they also make it their job to keep a line on rare and hard to find parts for older models. This is a huge plus!

Still one more thing to think about, is quality of service, as well as the quality of the business itself. You see your local mechanic is free to keep and operate his business as he wishes. A main dealer on the other hand has to abide by corporate standards on pretty much everything from how they treat their customers to how clean their bathrooms are.

If you own a car that's pretty much on its last leg some of the above listed items may not matter. In fact in that case you may be better off going to a mechanic who can do repairs with bailing wire. On the other hand, if you have a car that you care about and plan to keep running in good shape over the long haul, you're most likely better served by a main dealer.
